Look for SEANZ (Sustainable Energy Association of New Zealand) accreditation, which signals the installer has agreed to an industry code of conduct rather than just being easy to find online. Ask what panel and inverter brands they use, and get the warranty terms in writing, both on the panels themselves and on the installer's own workmanship.
From September 2026, electricians carrying out grid-tied solar work will need the Electrical Workers Registration Board's new Endorsed Mains Parallel Generation Systems registration as part of their licence renewal, so it's worth asking whether your installer's electricians already hold or are working toward this. It's also worth checking who handles the retailer paperwork and network connection application on your behalf, since a genuine local installer will usually manage this as part of the job rather than leaving it to you.
Costs vary with system size, roof type and whether you add a battery, so it's worth getting quotes from a couple of the installers above. Several offer 0-1% bank financing through major NZ banks, which can make a larger system more affordable upfront.
From October 2025, MBIE introduced a building consent exemption for most residential rooftop solar installations under 40m² per roof, so many typical home installs no longer need a building consent. Larger or more complex systems may still require one, so check with your installer or the Hastings District Council.
Surplus power you generate but don't use is exported back to the grid. From July 2026, major electricity retailers are required to offer time-of-use pricing and pay rebates for solar exported during peak times, which can meaningfully improve the payback on a system.
Yes. Hawke's Bay, including Hastings and Napier, averages around 2,200 hours of sunshine a year according to long-term NIWA climate records, putting it among New Zealand's sunniest regions and well ahead of cloudier centres like Wellington or the West Coast.
A battery lets you store surplus daytime generation to use in the evening rather than exporting it, which can be worthwhile if you're often out during the day or want backup power. Several Hastings installers, including Solar Concepts NZ, offer Tesla Powerwall installation, so it's worth asking for a battery-inclusive quote alongside a panels-only one.
