Start with what you need. Routine check-ups and hygiene, fillings and crowns, cosmetic work like whitening and veneers, orthodontics, and emergency or anxious-patient care are different focuses, so look for a practice that offers them.
Check that dentists are registered with the Dental Council of New Zealand, and ask how the practice handles costs, payment plans and emergencies. Many practices give a written treatment plan with prices before major work.
Comfort matters, especially if you are nervous. A good practice explains procedures, offers options for anxious patients, and has a calm, friendly team. Reviews, location and easy booking all help you keep up regular visits.
A check-up and clean typically runs around $90 to $180, with X-rays, fillings, crowns and cosmetic work priced separately. Reputable practices give a written quote before any major treatment.
Basic dental care is free for children and teens up to their 18th birthday through the Community Oral Health Service and enrolled providers. Ask local practices how to enrol your child.
Many Napier practices keep appointments for dental emergencies like severe pain, swelling or a broken tooth, and some offer after-hours care. Phone as early as possible and describe the problem.
Many practices offer payment options or interest-free finance such as Q Card, Afterpay or similar for larger treatments. Ask about plans and a written estimate before you proceed.
Dental anxiety is common and good practices are used to it, offering gentle care, clear explanations and sedation options at some clinics. Tell the team when you book so they can help you feel comfortable.
Reputable practices employ dentists registered with the Dental Council of New Zealand and holding an annual practising certificate. You are welcome to ask about a dentist's qualifications and experience.
