With painting, the preparation is most of the job. Washing, sanding, filling, priming and protecting surrounding surfaces all determine how good and how durable the finish is. In Whanganui, Whanganui's coastal salt air, westerly weather and UV are hard on exterior coatings, so ask how a painter approaches prep and what products they use.
For exterior work especially, timing around the weather matters. Get a written quote that sets out the number of coats, the products and what surfaces are included, and ask about any workmanship guarantee.
Cost depends on the size and condition of the surfaces, how much preparation and repair is needed, the number of coats and access. Exterior repaints on a weathered home cost more because of the prep. Get an itemised quote covering prep, primer, coats and products.
Whanganui's changeable, sometimes wet weather means exterior painting is best timed for drier, settled spells. Painters plan exterior work around dry, settled spells and suitable temperatures, since paint needs the right conditions to cure. Interior work can be done year-round.
With good prep and quality paint, a Whanganui exterior repaint typically lasts several years, though Whanganui's mild, sometimes wet coastal climate and exposure to westerly weather off the Tasman and sun exposure shorten that on the most exposed elevations. Quality preparation is the single biggest factor in how long it holds up.
Most do both, along with services like wallpapering, cedar staining, roof painting and GIB stopping. If your job includes specialist finishes, check the painter has done similar work and ask to see examples.
Be cautious. A low quote can mean less preparation or fewer coats, which shows up within a year or two. Compare what each quote actually includes, prep, number of coats and products, rather than just the headline price.
Reputable painters, including Registered Master Painters, stand behind their work with a workmanship guarantee. Ask what it covers and for how long, and get the scope and products confirmed in writing before work starts.
