Start with the type of work you need. A simple service and WOF is well within reach of any reputable workshop, while diagnostics, hybrid and EV work, or specialist European servicing call for a workshop with the right tools and training.
Look for an MTA-approved workshop and ask about guarantees on parts and labour. A clear written quote, honest advice about what needs doing now versus later, and good communication are the signs of a mechanic worth sticking with.
Location and convenience matter too. A workshop near home or work, with courtesy cars or a loan vehicle, makes regular servicing far easier to keep up with.
A basic service typically starts around $150 to $250, with a full service higher depending on the vehicle, oil type and any extra work found. Always ask for a written quote and confirmation before any additional repairs go ahead.
Most manufacturers recommend a service every 10,000 to 15,000 km or every 12 months, whichever comes first. Higher-mileage or older cars, and vehicles doing lots of short trips, may benefit from more frequent servicing.
A reputable independent workshop can service a newer car without voiding its warranty, as long as the service meets the manufacturer's schedule and uses the correct parts and oils. Independents are often more affordable and convenient than a dealership.
MTA stands for the Motor Trade Association. An MTA-approved workshop has agreed to a code of ethics and a dispute resolution process, which gives you extra peace of mind if something goes wrong.
Many Timaru workshops are approved to issue Warrants of Fitness alongside servicing, so you can often get both done in one visit. Confirm when booking.
An increasing number do. Hybrids and EVs need technicians with specific training and equipment, so check that the workshop lists hybrid or EV servicing before booking.
