Start with your event and style. A plated wedding dinner, a grazing or canape function, a corporate lunch, and a relaxed buffet or food truck are quite different jobs, so look for a caterer who clearly does the kind of event you are planning.
Ask about menus, tastings and how they handle dietary requirements such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and allergies. Confirm whether staff, serving gear, crockery and clean-up are included, or quoted separately.
Check how they price, usually per head with minimums, and what the final cost covers. Recent reviews on food quality, presentation and turning up on time are the best guide to who to trust with the catering.
Catering is usually priced per head, often from around $25 to $45 a head for buffets and canapes, and $60 to $100-plus for plated multi-course meals. Staff, hire gear and travel may be extra, so get a detailed quote.
For weddings and large functions, three to six months ahead is wise, and more over the busy summer and December period. Smaller events can often be booked with a few weeks' notice, but popular caterers fill up fast.
Reputable caterers cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal and common allergies when you let them know in advance. Always confirm numbers and specific requirements when you finalise the menu.
Many offer waiting and kitchen staff, crockery, glassware, linen and serving equipment, either included or as add-ons. Confirm exactly what is in the quote and what you need to hire separately.
Most established caterers handle weddings, corporate functions, private parties and more. Check the caterer has experience with your specific type and size of event.
Many caterers offer a menu tasting for weddings and larger events, sometimes free and sometimes for a small fee credited to your booking. Ask when you enquire.
