For a straightforward warrant, a dedicated inspection centre is fast and impartial, since they do not also sell repairs. If your car is older or you suspect it might need work, a workshop that does both the WOF and any repairs can be more convenient.
Price is fairly consistent across Dunedin, often between $50 and $80, so weigh up location, wait times and whether you want repairs handled in the same visit. Many places take online bookings, which beats waiting in line.
Remember that the inspector cannot charge you to re-check minor items fixed within the allowed window, and you are never obliged to have repairs done at the same place that failed your WOF.
A Warrant of Fitness typically costs between $50 and $80 in Dunedin, depending on the provider. Dedicated inspection centres and workshops set their own fees, so it is worth checking when you book.
Cars first registered on or after 1 January 2000 need a WOF once a year. Older vehicles need one every six months. The expiry date is shown on your current WOF label and in your vehicle records.
A WOF checks safety-related items including tyres, brakes, lights, steering, suspension, the windscreen and wipers, seatbelts, and the general structural condition of the vehicle. It is not a mechanical service or a guarantee of reliability.
You will get a list of the items that failed. You can have them repaired anywhere you like, then return for a re-check. If you go back to the same inspector within the allowed timeframe, the re-check of those items is usually free.
Driving on an expired WOF is an offence and can affect your insurance. If the WOF expired and the car is unsafe, you should not drive it except directly to or from a WOF appointment or repairer.
Many Dunedin providers take walk-ins, but booking online or by phone reduces waiting time, especially at busy workshops. Dedicated inspection centres are usually quick either way.
