Start with the shoot and the style. Weddings, events and functions, family and newborn portraits, and commercial or product photography are different specialties, so look for a photographer whose portfolio matches what you want, from classic and timeless to relaxed and documentary.
Look closely at full galleries, not just highlight reels, to see consistency across a whole event. Check what each package includes, hours of coverage, number of edited images, a second shooter, albums and prints, and how long delivery takes.
Meet or call to check you get on, since you will spend the day with them. Confirm backups, insurance and a written contract, and read recent reviews for reliability and how the final images turned out.
Wedding photography commonly runs from around $2,000 to $5,000-plus depending on hours, albums and a second shooter, while portrait and event sessions are often charged hourly or as set packages. Get a clear list of what each package includes.
Popular wedding photographers are often booked nine to twelve months ahead, and longer for peak summer dates. For portraits and smaller events, a few weeks is usually enough.
Turnaround varies, but expect a few weeks for portraits and events and around four to eight weeks for weddings, sometimes with a sneak peek sooner. Confirm delivery times in your contract.
Most packages include professionally edited high-resolution digital images, with albums, prints and wall art available as extras. Check how many edited images you receive and the print and usage rights.
Established professionals carry insurance and have a network to arrange a backup shooter if needed, with your images still edited to their style. Ask how they handle emergencies before you book.
Many do weddings, events, headshots, real estate and commercial or product photography. Check the photographer has experience and a portfolio in the type of work you need.
